01How an esports tournament works
Each game has its own in-game rules — but tournaments share one structure: teams register, get seeded into a bracket or groups, play best-of series, and advance until a grand final. The rulebook you sign covers the other half: eligibility, equipment, pauses, and integrity.
Roster locks
You enter with a fixed roster (plus maybe one substitute). Playing anyone not on the roster — a "ringer" — is instant disqualification.
Check-in & schedule
Most events require check-in 15–60 min before your match; miss it and you forfeit. Online quals feed offline (LAN) finals.
Advance the bracket
Win your series, move on. Lose — you're out (single elim), drop to the losers bracket (double elim), or keep playing (groups/Swiss).

03Match structure: series, maps & drafts
- Best-of-N seriesA "match" is usually best of 3 (Bo3) or 5 (Bo5) games/maps. Bo1 appears in early online rounds; grand finals are Bo5 in most titles.
- Map/character vetoBefore play, teams alternate banning and picking maps (FPS) or drafting/banning heroes (MOBAs). The veto is part of the match — study it like a coin toss you can win.
- Sides & game rulesAttack/defence sides, starting positions or first pick are decided by seed, coin flip or the veto sequence, per the event rulebook.
- Pauses & disconnectsEach team gets limited tactical/technical pauses. Disconnects follow rulebook timers — usually a remake window early, otherwise play on with four.
- Forfeits & punctualityGrace periods are short (often 10–15 min). Late = map loss or series forfeit. Treat match time like a flight departure.

Dota 2 / LoL
Destroy the enemy base structure (Ancient/Nexus). Gold, experience and objectives snowball into the final push.
Valorant / CS2
Round-based attack vs defence: plant or defuse the bomb, or eliminate the other side. First to 13 rounds, swap sides halfway.
BGMI / Fortnite
Many squads, one shrinking zone. Points across multiple lobbies for placement + eliminations decide the tournament winner.
Tekken / SF6
Win rounds to take games, games to take sets. Double elimination is the genre's tradition — losers-bracket runs are legend.
EA FC / NBA 2K
Digital versions of the sports on this site — normal sport rules apply, series and brackets carry the tournament.
StarCraft II / AoE
Out-build and out-manoeuvre until the opponent types "gg" and taps out. The oldest esport lineage.
05Fair play — the universal rulebook
Cheating software
Aimbots, wallhacks, macros, exploiting known bugs: instant disqualification and usually a multi-event ban. Anti-cheat runs at every serious event.
No smurfing or account sharing
Play on your own account at your real rank. Letting a stronger player use your slot is the esports version of bib-swapping.
No match fixing
Throwing games for bracket position, bets or "splits" draws lifetime bans. Report approaches — rulebooks oblige you to.
Only your team
Mid-match coaching is restricted in most titles (allowed only in pauses/between maps). Spectator info from a stream — "stream sniping" — is cheating.
Toxicity costs
Slurs and harassment in all-chat earn warnings, round penalties, or removal. Trash talk lives on the fine line; keep it about the game.
Age & region locks
Many titles set minimum ages (often 16+; 18+ for some) and region requirements for qualifiers. Check before you register the squad.
06LAN etiquette — your first offline event
- Bring your own peripheralsKeyboard, mouse, mousepad, headset — PCs and monitors are provided, your settings are not. Carry a config backup on a USB drive or cloud.
- Arrive early, set up slowDriver installs and settings checks eat 30 minutes. Admins will not delay a bracket for your DPI settings.
- Handshake, then GGGreet opponents before, say "gg" after — win or lose. Slamming desks and storming off follows you around a scene faster than any ranking.
- Admins are refereesDisputes go to the tournament admin, whose ruling is final — argue your case once, calmly, with evidence (screenshots, demos).

Is esports actually a sport?
It's organised, skill-based competition with training, teams, referees and world championships — the Olympic movement now runs the Olympic Esports Games. Whether you call it "sport" matters less than this: the tournament discipline (practice, brackets, nerves) is identical, which is why it lives on this site.
How do I find tournaments to enter?
Platforms like start.gg, Challonge, Battlefy and FACEIT list open brackets by game and region; publishers run official circuits (VCT Game Changers, ESL Open); colleges and cafés host weekly locals. Same discovery problem Game Open solves for turf and courts — one listing at a time.
What does "seeding" mean?
Ranking entrants by strength so the best teams can't meet in round one. Your qualifier results or ladder rank decides your seed — and your bracket path. Upsets are when seeds fall.
Do I need a monster PC to compete?
Not to enter: LANs provide machines, and most competitive titles (CS2, Valorant, Dota, BGMI on mobile) run on modest hardware — pros play at low settings for frames anyway. A stable 60+ fps and low-latency internet (for online quals) beat ray tracing every time.

Olympic Esports Games
The IOC's first Olympic Esports Games is slated for 2027 in Saudi Arabia — a major step toward international esports governance and standardised event rules.
